To experience nature at its most breathtaking, visit one of Dawson County's many spectacular waterfalls. Amicalola Falls is a stunning 729-foot waterfall that offers an easily accessible view or a steep climb up 600+ steps for the athletic. Fall Creek Falls offers a rare view of a set of four waterfalls just up a moderate hiking trail, while Cochran Falls cascades 600 feet from a vertical descent on Frosty Mountain. Paddle in by canoe to see the Edge of the World Rapids which appear to fall of the “edge of the world.”

Spectacular scenery and hiking trails make this waterfall a destination not to miss. Visitors interested in hiking may park at either the top or the base of the falls to travel a well-maintained trail that includes over 600 steps.  An additional 8.5 mile trail connects the falls to the terminus of the Appalachian Trail on nearby Springer Mountain.  Visitors may also view the falls from a handicap accessible pathway.  Stop by the Park Welcome Center for more information. 
Directions: From the Intersection of Highway 53 and Highway 400, drive 2 miles north and turn left on Hwy 136 West. Drive 12 miles and turn right on Bailey Waters Road. Drive 3.6 miles and turn left onto GA 52 East.  Drive 4 miles and turn right on Amicalola Falls State Park Road.

From the viewpoint of a canoeist coming down the Amicalola River, it appears as if the river simply drops off the edge of the world.  These are class IV rapids that are beautiful to view and provide a fun place to relax and play.
Directions: From the Intersection of Highway 53 and Highway 400, drive 14 miles on Highway 53 West (you pass through downtown Dawsonville).  There is a gravel parking lot on the right immediately before crossing the Amicalola River.  There is a handicap accessible trail that leads you to the rapids which are about 0.5 miles downstream from the trail head.

The four falls on Fall Creek are in the Wildcat Tract of Dawson Forest.
The highest part of the trails in the Wildcat Tract is the beginning of the Tobacco Pouch Trail, accessed from Monument Road. The lowest part of the trail is the Wildcat Campground on the Amicalola River. The total elevation change is almost 1400 feet.
From Monument Road, follow the Tobacco Pouch Trail for 0.3 miles to the junction with Rocky Ford Trail at the sign.  Turn left onto the Fall Creek Trail and go downhill for about .6 miles to Fall Creek.  Follow the creek downstream for about .3 miles to the creek crossing. The first falls will be on the right soon after crossing the creek and is a continuous cascade for several hundred feet.  It is difficult to get close to because of the thick undergrowth. Travel another 0.7 miles of down and up hiking before reaching the cove below the second and largest falls on Fall Creek.  Walk up the cove a short distance on fairly level ground to this impressive falls.  Fall Creek Falls coordinates: 4.5156,-84.3185
Continue to follow the trail downstream about 0.7 miles where the trail crosses over the creek once more. The third falls will be on the left. Continue on the trail to the cove and walk up the cove a short distance on level ground to view the falls.         Lower Falls coordinates: 34.51316,-84.30716
Rejoin the trail at the bottom of the cove. Continue on Fall Creek Trail past the junction with Tobacco Pouch Trail to the junction with Wildcat Trail. Just before reaching Wildcat Creek is a trail to the left. This trail leads about .5 miles to a fourth falls on Fall Creek.  Fourth Falls Coordinates:
On returning to the Fall Creek trail, a significant creek crossing of Wildcat Creek is required before reaching the Wildcat Creek Trail. Ropes across the creek aid in the crossing. Follow Wildcat Trail 1.5 miles along Wildcat Creek to the foot bridge at the Wildcat Campground area.
Directions to Wildcat Campground: From the Intersection of Highway 53 and Highway 400, drive 17 miles on Highway 53 West (you pass through downtown Dawsonville) and turn right on Steve Tate Road.  Drive 7.2 miles (just past Pleasant Union Baptist Church) and turn left onto Wildcat Camp Road.  Drive 0.8 miles on graveled road to campground.  There is a foot bridge across the Amicalola River near the entrance to the campground and a second foot bridge across Wildcat Creek at the far end of the campground marks the beginning of the Wildcat Creek Trail.  Campground Coordinates: 34-4953,-84.2808
Directions to Monument Road Trail Head: From the Intersection of Highway 53 and Highway 400, drive 2 miles north and turn left on Hwy 136 West.  Stay on Hwy 136 West for 17.4 miles and turn left to stay on Hwy 136 West.  Drive 6.4 miles and turn left on Monument Road. Proceed approximately 3.2 miles to the Dawson Forest sign and a kiosk on the left indicating the Tobacco Pouch Trailhead. Trail head coordinates:34.50716,-84.3355   

 

Cochrans Falls

Cochrans Falls cascades approximately 600 feet vertically descending from Frosty Mountain. The largest falls is at the top and is the first image shown above. After the initial falls shown the falls continues to cascade steeply for about another 150 feet before changing to a series of smaller cascades to the bottom. 
Directions: From the Intersection of Highway 53 and Highway 400, drive 2 miles north and turn left on Hwy 136 West. Drive 12 miles and turn right on Bailey Waters Road. Stay straight and cross over Hwy 52 onto Wesley Chapel Road. Drive .8 miles and turn left on Dan Fowler Road.  Drive 1.2 miles and turn left on Blackhawk Road. Ford the creek.  The road parallels a field for the first 100 yards or so before reaching a fork.  Take the left fork and ford Cochrans Creek twice in the next .6 miles. Continue on this road until you decide to park and walk.

Bearden Falls

Bearden Falls is located in the Chattahoochee National Forest on Bearden Creek.
Directions: From the Intersection of Highway 53 and Highway 400, drive 2 miles north and turn left on Hwy 136 West. Drive 12 miles and turn right on Bailey Waters Road. Drive 3.6 miles and turn right on GA 52 East.  Drive 3 miles and turn left on Nimblewill Church Road. Drive 4.5 miles to the National Forest boundary and continue for 2 more miles.  Pull over and park to the right to begin the hike to the falls.  Follow Nimblewill and Bearden Creek for approximately 1.5 miles to the falls.
