Birdwatching
Birding is a popular pastime for visitors and locals alike. Dawson County's diverse topography, changing in elevation from river lowlands to mountain highlands, creates a rich ecosystem that attracts a wide variety of bird species. The Dawson Forest WMA  (Parking Pass Required)  is a birder’s paradise, enticing annual migrations of geese, mallards, wood ducks, and other colorful species such as neotropical warblers, tanagers, orioles, and grosbeaks. Near the Etowah River is an area of maturing second-growth forest, home to a number of breeding warblers and other neotropical migrants, including a few blue-winged warblers, plus waterfowl and shorebirds.
